La Jolla Underwater Ecological Reserve, La Jolla, California; hundreds of Common Market Squid (Loligo opalescens) mating and laying egg casings on the sandy bottom, a sheath encapsulates hundreds of individual eggs, the females insert one end of the egg capsules into the sand so that the ocean surge can aerate the eggs, groups of egg capsules create egg beds that can cover acres of sea floor, the eggs take 3-5 weeks to hatch
